When it comes to our technical timber webinars, we are only just getting started. In fact, 2022 marks our most ambitious year yet. Our most successful Learn with TRADA Live series – Structural Timber Engineering and Fundamentals of Timber – are returning for a full repeat, while new series are also being added!
These online events will not require you to participate with video and audio. However, questions submitted during the webinar will be answered in the extensive panel Q&A at the end of the session. Please note: These webinars will not be available as recordings.
We are taking bookings for the following series, all of which are now available to all attendees for free.

The Structural Timber Engineering series
This five-part series, curated by the BM TRADA timber team and led by Dr Keerthi Ranasinghe, lead contributor to Eurocode 5 span tables 4th edition and Manual for the design of timber building structures to Eurocode 5 2nd edition, is a detailed introduction to structural timber engineering for practising engineers as well as students.
Sustainable, elegant and enduring, timber as a structural material has been used to construct buildings since the dawn of civilisation, and is a popular alternative to other mainstream building materials as it is a renewable resource – if sourced from a sustainably managed forest with FSC or PEFC certification. However, it is still not routinely covered in all engineering courses.

The Fundamentals of Timber series
Timber as a material offers a fantastic opportunity to the wider construction industry. It is low carbon, environmentally friendly, and – if sourced from a sustainably managed forest with FSC or PEFC certification – a renewable resource. As a result, designers and construction professionals prioritising sustainability are increasingly turning towards timber in place of other, more carbon intensive building materials in order to mitigate climate change.
The Fundamentals of Timber webinar series, which first ran 2021–22, is intended as a detailed introduction for professionals within the built environment who are new to the material as well as timber industry staff who cross- and up-sell timber products and services. Attendees will develop a robust understanding of basic timber concepts across eight webinars delivered in May and June.

Modern methods of timber frame construction were introduced into the UK in the 1960s and are a fully accepted method of building. There are now many examples of multi-storey timber frame buildings of six or seven storeys across the UK, and use of timber frame continues to grow as a mainstream construction method for dwellings and medium-rise buildings. This is because timber frame offers a range of benefits, including the potential for excellent energy efficiency, fast completion (consequently reducing site work), and economic use of materials, all of which are maximised when off-site prefabrication is utilised.
