Recovering and minimising wood waste

Wood and wood-based products are used in a wide range of applications, some with service lives of many decades before they enter the waste stream. However, it is only in recent years that an industry has emerged to recycle wood waste, where qualities such as a low moisture content compared with virgin wood have made recycled wood fibre popular for a variety of applications.

Traditionally, green wood 'arisings' from forestry and horticulture have also been considered as waste, however markets are now available to exploit much of this material.

This Wood Information Sheet examines various options for prevention and re-use of wood waste, reviews existing and anticipated legislation and offers guidance on best practice.

Contents:

  • Wood waste arisings
  • Forms of wood waste
  • Options for recovered wood waste
  • The need to reduce landfill
  • Disposal considerations
  • Present and future markets for wood waste
  • The development of a biomass market
  • Future regulations of wood waste
