6% of heavy side firms reported that sales declined in Q2, the lowest balance since 2018 Q1. Only 9% of light side firms reported that sales rose in Q2, down from 46% in Q1. 27% of heavy side product manufacturers and 23% of light side product manufacturers reported that they anticipated sales rising over the coming year. Employment data revealed a weak picture, with the heavy side recording the lowest balance in six years. Exports fell for 44% of heavy side firms, compared to a year earlier, the weakest balance in nearly 11 years.
