Surveys of the construction supply chain during the fourth quarter of 2019 confirm that the industry ended the year on a subdued note. Workloads were reported to have fallen, on balance, for SME contractors, whilst civil engineering contractors reported a slight rise in workloads, according to 3% of firms, on balance. It was a similarly mixed performance for product manufacturers, with equal proportions of heavy side firms (43%) reporting either an annual increase or decrease in sales during the period, and 36% of light side manufacturers also reporting either a rise or fall.
