The purpose of the requirements in Part F is to ensure that buildings are provided with adequate ventilation to ensure the health and safety of occupants. According to statistics we typically spend up to 80% of our time indoors and therefore indoor air quality is the key issue that Part F tries to address. This includes basics such as having sufficient oxygen to breathe, as well as issues like mould, pollutants and even body odour.
The revisions to Part F are set against a background of changes to Part L which is driving buildings to become increasingly air-tight, which means that the correct design and implementation of ventilation systems is ever more important and difficult to achieve. As buildings become more airtight we can no longer rely on unintended gaps, leaks and draughts to provide the necessary air changes to our buildings and as a result controlled ventilation needs to be increased.
