WoodBUILD 2018 – the offsite timber revolution

This year, the WoodBuild Wales conference and expo, where TRADA will be exhibiting, is being held on Thursday 14th June at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

The WoodBUILD 2018 programme is packed with presentations and panel discussions to help inform housing developers, policy makers and the whole supply chain on how to achieve better outcomes in the delivering of homes. In the wake of the recent Grenfell tragedy and the Carillion debacle, now is the right time for innovation and change.

Anthony Thistleton-Smith from Waugh Thistleton Architects is the keynote speaker for the afternoon session. Anthony will describe how the application of new technology such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) can help to deliver better buildings.

But technology is only one component of change. In order to transform fully, the industry needs the right skills to move to offsite manufacturing and to deliver sustainable low whole-life carbon solutions in theory and practice. This big topic will be addressed by Prof Sam Allwinkle.

To put this aspiration into a local context, Daniel Ball from LivEco will share his view on how to deliver quality in a difficult market – drawing upon his recent experiences as a developer of high-performance low carbon homes in Cardiff.

The final session of the day is focused on how to drive change in the relatively conservative industries of construction and forestry. Rebecca Evans AM, the new Welsh Minister for Housing and Regeneration, will address the delegates – not to be missed.

The conference will conclude with the official launch of the ground-breaking Powys-led, all-Wales Home-Grown Homes Project that is seeking to have a transformative impact on the Welsh timber construction sector and its local timber supply chain.

Exova BM TRADA’s role in this project is to support the timber manufacturing sector to increase efficiency and quality and to offer best practice advice to those involved in The Home-Grown Homes Project.
