An all-star line-up of some of the biggest names in architecture and construction captivated audiences at Timber Expo this year with their ground-breaking designs using timber.

One of the key highlights for TRADA in 2017 was partnering, once again, with Timber Expo at the NEC in Birmingham to inspire the next generation of young architects and engineers to build iconic timber buildings.

TRADA was proud to welcome an all-star line-up of some of the biggest names in architecture and construction, including: Darron Haylock of Foster & Partners, Steven Wallis of dRMM and Jim Heverin of Zaha Hadid Architects. Our stellar cast of speakers captivated audiences talking about the role timber played in their vision for achieving their award-winning designs.

Check out a talk by Darron Haylock, Partner of Foster & Partners, who gave a fascinating insight into Maggie’s at the Robert Parfett Building at the Timber Focus Theatre at Timber Expo 2017 in October:

Located throughout Britain and overseas, Maggie’s Centres are conceived to provide a welcoming ‘home away from home’ – a place of refuge where people affected by cancer can find emotional and practical support.

Inspired by the blueprint for a new type of care set out by Maggie Keswick Jencks, they place great value upon the power of architecture to lift the spirits and help in the process of therapy.

Darron Haylock, Partner at Foster & Partners, says: “I was delighted to be part of Timber Expo and welcomed the opportunity to talk about Maggie’s.

“When we started the design process, there was no debate: we all wanted to use timber as a structural material. In wood, there is hope, warmth, beauty and nature, all known to reduce blood pressure, heart rates, recovery time and promote a sense of well-being.

“We built Maggie’s in components, like an Airfix model, and completed it in six weeks. We are very proud of the building and delighted that it is being used to such good effect.”

Grand Designs’ Kevin McCloud, Tom Dyckhoff, presenter of the BBC’s Great Interior Design Challenge, and George Clarke, host of Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces, also made an appearance at Timber Expo 2017.
