Thank you for attending the third Fundamentals session, 'Wood and timber properties'.

The final two webinars of the series cover moisture in timber, and take place on 2 November and 14 December 2021 (12:00–13:00 GMT). Since moisture is an important subject and the webinars are best attended in sequence, attendees can only register for both webinars as a bundle. These webinars are free for all TRADA members. Non-members may purchase the bundle for £60 +VAT.

WOOD INFORMATION SHEET

Timbers – their properties & uses

This WIS sets out the properties and uses of 140 timber species used in the UK. This can be used to help with species selection or to identify species with comparable properties when alternatives are required.

The data is presented alphabetically by standard name and includes the botanical name for the species, region of origin, timber type and colour, average density, texture, moisture movement, working qualities, natural durability (fungi), treatability (heartwood) and availability. Remarks on notable features, where applicable, are included. Finally, common uses for each timber are listed.

Available to: Members, Registered Users, Lecturers and Students.

WOOD INFORMATION SHEET

Specifying metals for use with timber

This WIS describes tried and tested principles and practices for minimising the risk of corrosion, and provides specifiers and designers with examples of where the risk of the corrosion of metals by timber is most likely to be encountered.

Contents

  • How does timber corrode metal?
  • Commonly used timbers and the correct specification of metals
  • Commonly used metals and specifying correctly with timber
  • General principles/checklist

Available to: Members and Lecturers. Free for Registered Users and Students for a limited time.

SPECIFICATION

National Structural Timber Specification

The National Structural Timber Specification for Building Construction (NSTS) is an ambitious initiative by TRADA to support the rapidly increasing use of timber. It aims to be the definitive, comprehensive, stand-alone national specification for structural timber, complementing the existing national specifications that are widely used for steel and concrete buildings.

This specification now covers both softwoods and hardwoods. Hardwood structures, including unseasoned woods that are generically known as 'green oak', have been added to NSTS Version 2.0.

LEARNING RESOURCE

Choosing species

Commercial timber species number in the hundreds. A very much smaller number are commonly specified and used. When choosing a timber for a given structural use, two main considerations are strength and appearance – strength properties for structural integrity and appearance for aesthetic appeal.

Contents:

  • Classification and strength grading
  • Strength properties and density
  • Summary of key points

LEARNING RESOURCE

Principles of design with timber

Wood is a natural material. From growth to use, its structural properties are highly variable as a result of a range of influencing factors including: density, moisture content, temperature, grain deviation, and knots. The effects these have on its structural properties require careful consideration.

Contents:

  • Structural considerations
  • Factors affecting strength
  • Timber movement
  • Differential movement
  • Resistance to abrasion and impact

LEARNING RESOURCE

Strength-reducing factors

In an ideal world, trees would grow to produce straight-grained and clear timber, but this does not always happen. Therefore, in order to make the best use of the available resources, it is necessary to understand and place limits on the natural growth features of timber when it is to be used for structural purposes.

Contents:

  • Strength grading
  • Growth features in timber
  • Timber degradation
