TRADA Timber in Construction Student Prize 2006

The 'TRADA Timber in Construction Student Prize' is designed to recognise excellence and innovation in the use of timber in construction amongst university students of engineering and architecture.

Winners will receive:

1st prize - £1000

2nd prize - £500

 Supported by:

Entering the award need not entail any extra work for the students (other than completing the entry form), as their submission could simply be, for example, a copy of their final year thesis or design project under way as part of their course.

The judges will be looking for projects that demonstrate innovative and inspiring applications of timber within any type of structure, including restoration and conservation of existing buildings, private buildings, public buildings or non-building structures (e.g. bridges).

The prize is open to engineering and / or architectural students, but entries must include consideration of Eurocode 1995.  We are very happy for both engineering and architectural students to work together on submissions.

Roger Knipe, Queens University of Belfast, received 1st prize of £1000 in 2005

Judging criteria

The judges will evaluate the following:

  1. Concept design
  2. Material specification
  3. Durability
  4. Project impact
  5. Supporting evidence

Entries should be designed in accordance with Eurocode 0, 1 and 5 (EN 1995-1-1, EN 1995-1-2 and EN 1995-2).  TRADA's Timber Design Knowledge software, an information resource and guidance document for the structural application of timber, may be of use for this. The software is available to students free of charge from http://research.ttlchiltern.co.uk/pif294

Oliver Edwards, University of Nottingham, received 2nd prize of £500 in 2005

The judges would also like students to strengthen their entry by submitting supporting material, e.g. design drawings, photographs, calculations using Eurocode 1995 etc.  Supporting material may be submitted on CD or hardcopy.
