Grange Manor Hotel, Grangemouth
Monday 21 May 2007
16:30 - 20:00

Following the success of our new book Green oak in construction, TRADA, with support from the Forestry Commission and Scottish Enterprise, has organised an exciting one-off evening CPD event on the use of green oak in construction.

In recent years there has been a rise in popularity of building frames constructed from green oak - in other words, timber which is unseasoned.  Green oak has formed the structure of many historic buildings and offers tremendous potential for creating modern buildings of outstanding beauty.

This event has been designed to inspire and provide technical information on the use of green oak in construction and will include:

  • A technical seminar on 'Green oak in construction', delivered by Peter Ross, a well-known timber designer of both new-build schemes and historic repairs.  CPD certificates will be issued.
  • Demonstrations of the production, grading and supply of green oak beams by a member of the ASHS, the Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers.
  • A hot buffet dinner.

Who should attend?

The event is aimed at anyone with an interest in green oak, including designers, specifiers, engineers and carpenters.

Event programme

16:30 - 17:30

Arrival and coffee.  Also visit the TRADA stand and ASHS demonstrations of the production, grading and supply of green oak beams.
17:30 - 18:45 Green oak in construction

Peter will first explore the reasons for using green timber, and then go on to look at:

  • The material's properties
  • The history of use, from the Middle Ages onward
  • Design rules
  • Exterior use - cladding, walkways and bridges
  • Its 'greenness' in environmental terms

The seminar will conclude with some case studies, which illustrate the diversity of uses of this simultaneously ancient and modern material.

Peter Ross, Consultant to Arup and co-author of Green oak in construction

18:45 - 20:00 Hot buffet dinner.  There will also be another opportunity to view the ASHS demonstrations.

Cost of attending

TRADA members can attend free of charge (one free place per member company).  Non-members and additional TRADA member places are available at £40 + VAT.

TRADA will have copies of Green oak in construction available to look through at the event.  Written by Peter Ross (ARUP), Christopher Mettem (TRADA Technology) and Andrew Holloway (Green Oak Carpentry Company), the book describes the whole process of designing a building based on a green oak frame and explains how the frame will behave over time.

The cost of Green oak in construction is £45.00 + P&P to TRADA members and £65.00 + P&P to non-members.
