Government procurement policies, more awareness and better understanding by the public are all contributing to an increased demand for certified timber goods. This demand will continue to grow, with furniture and DIY retailing expected to respond accordingly. Retailers buying and selling timber or wood based products will be aware of the pressure for products to be procured from a proven sustainable resource. In response to this trend, FIRA is running half day workshops designed to help retailers to understand how to specify certified products and how to implement their own ‘Chain of Custody' system.

The course is open to all retailers who buy and sell timber or wood based products and who want to find out more about the implications of this trend and the potential marketing benefits that can accrue from stocking certified products.

The workshop will discuss the different types of systems and schemes currently available, covering in detail the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) initiatives. The certification process will be discussed and there will be opportunities for delegates to bring along specific problems or issues that they may have encountered for discussion.
