Duration
Start Date: November 2001
Finish Date: March 2004
Background

Timber frame is now an established method of construction in the UK and the need for individual structural checking of every case by Building Control authorities is no longer necessary, nor is it conducive to progress. Establishing recognised design rules will reduce repetitive calculations and will provide scope for specifications to be developed for computer design software as well as opening avenues for further innovations in modularised timber frame construction.

Project Aim
To develop a simplified design guide for the design and specification of timber frame walls in the form of a Building Regulations ‘Approved Document’. This will include the range of strength classes of graded softwood identified as appropriate to remove existing practice barriers to the more widespread use of UK grown timber in wall construction
