This WI Sheet, produced in association with the UK Timber Frame Association, explains the basic principles used in meeting fire performance requirements and provides guidance to ensure that all parties involved understand their role in the design and contruction of a timber frame building.
The sheet considers both the design and construction of the timber frame building in relation to the Building Regulations for England and Wales. It also looks at fire safety on construction sites.
This sheet covers results of research concerning the reinstatement of timber frame buildings after fire. A series of flowcharts promote a methodical approach to the assessment of damage based on each type of structural element guiding the assessor through a series of steps towards reinstatement based on the premise that "if it was there in the first place, put it back".
Most loadbearing elements have some form of service penetration into or through them. This report presents the results of reduced-scale fire resistance tests to BS 476-22 on timber frame external and internal walls and intermediate floors of 30 and 60 minute fire resistance and a 60 minute compartment floor. Penetrations included electrical socket outlets and switch boxes, copper and plastic pipes, ceiling light drops and downlighters.
