Chain of Custody is the unbroken path which products take from the forest to the consumer, including all stages of manufacture, transportation and distribution.

Chain of Custody certification provides evidence that the certified product originates from certified, well managed forests, and verifies that these products are not mixed with products from uncertified forests at any point in the supply chain, except under strict controls when percentage (%) labelling is being used.

Certification offers independent verification of the 'truth' of product labelling and reassures purchasers all along the chain of supply that a forest product bearing a label conforms to the claims being made on that label.

BM TRADA are accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to offer FSC chain of custody certification, and UKAS to offer PEFC chain of custody certification.

A third, unaccredited chain of custody scheme, is also offered by BM TRADA that covers the following:

  • The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTTC) scheme
  • The Congolese Industry du Bois (CIB) scheme
  • The Samartex Timber and Plywood scheme
  • The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) scheme - ratified by PEFC
  • The American Sustainable Forestry Initiative scheme (SFI) - ratified by PEFC
