Preproject study into incentives to promote sustainable development of tropical forests
Project aims
To identify and assess measures aimed at providing incentives in both producer and consumer countries in support of ITTO’s overall objective to seek a balance between utilisation and conservation of tropical forests in accordance with the ITTA, 1983
Countries
- UK/Japan; Indonesia; Papua New Guinea; Ghana; Zaire; Brazil; Trinidad
Activities
- Review of factors affecting sustainability
- Study of log and timber movements from source to export, covering role of tree sellers and buyers, processors and merchants and exporters
- Description of agents, shipping and customs practices
- Study of timber movements from importer to consumer, covering individual consignments, stocks held by suppliers, and retail outlets
- Identification of measures to achieve ITTO’s objective of sustainable development, including expansion and diversification of trade and management systems
- Consultation with timber producers, forestry agencies, other government authorities and the private sector in relation to the above
- Case studies of representative management units in each country
Outputs
- Preparation of a final report on the feasibility and practicality of the measures and incentives necessary to promote sustainability
