Timber drying kilns using solar energy
Project aims
To prepare a practical manual on solar kilns, covering background information, the selection of suitable kiln types and construction materials, and methods of construction, operation and maintenance
Countries
Activities
- Survey of existing solar kilns in Guyana, Honduras and Belize
- Identification of types of solar kiln which have proved effective
- Drafting of manual on solar kilns of selected types, including principles of wood drying, solar energy collection and solar kiln design, examples of selected kiln types with costings, kiln performance, control, operation, maintenance and repair
- Discussion of draft with DFID (ODA), UNIDO, ITDG and Cambridge Glass House (manufacturer)· Finalisation of draft· Flyer mailshot to relevant organisation in developing countries
Outputs
- Printing and publication of the manual Solar heated timber drying kilns - a manual on their design and operation
- Distribution of the manual free of charge to interested parties
- Preparation of a final report summarising findings and presenting recommendations for further work
