The range of modified wood products available in the UK is likely to increase as further development work is undertaken in Europe and elsewhere. TRADA's Wood Information Sheet Modified wood products aims to help specifiers select the most appropriate modified wood for a particular end use.
Modified wood is that which has been treated with a chemical, biological or physical agent to enhance its performance. It excludes wood treated with biocides (ie wood preservatives).
One of the main drivers for wood modification has been to improve the decay resistance of low durability timbers including those grown in Europe. These timber species normally require preservative treatment to achieve desired service lives for many applications. However, a number of other beneficial changes to wood properties, including improved dimensional stability, may also result. These have increased both performance of wood products and the range of applications.
Modified wood products describes the properties and end uses of the various types available and discusses the advantages they may have over solid wood.
Modified wood is normally imported into the UK and distributed - but UK timber suppliers do not stock all types, mainly because many of the modification plants are located elsewhere in Europe and their capacity for production may be small, supplying needs at local and national level only. The Wood Information Sheet lists contact details for manufacturers who will in turn be able to provide information on UK suppliers and information on the performance of products in service in the countries of manufacture.
