A literature search of archive material, consultancy reports and known cases of on-site discolouration has been completed as part of a TRADA research project to investigate the causes of discolouration of external unfinished timber cladding. A test site has also been identified.
The project aims are:
To identify the cause(s) for the various forms of unpredictable discolouration of unfinished exterior cladding in service.
By means of site-based trials where possible, to establish the effectiveness of preventative treatment or design measures to prevent discolouration occurring in service.
To develop appropriate strategies for the remedy and long-term prevention of discolouration on exterior cladding.
The ultimate objective is to improve the aesthetics of cladding in service and to dispel the perception that surface discolouration in timber cladding means decay. In addition, as a large number of TRADA members supply and install timber cladding, it is hoped that the project will enhance confidence in the use of unfinished wood cladding.
Deliverables will include a written report, which will in turn allow TRADA to update its specialist publications on external timber cladding.
Cladding suppliers are invited to participate in additional work as an adjunct to the main project. For more information please contact .
