Standard Details available: mineral wool insulation in timber frame

TRADA Technology has published
Timber frame: standard details for thermal performance. Volume 1: Mineral wool insulation, to be followed up at the end of July by
Volume 2: Rigid foam insulation, both in electronic PDF format.
From October 2010, Approved Document L: Conservation of fuel and power of the Building Regulations for England & Wales will demand a 25% improvement in thermal performance compared with the 2006 version. The Code for Sustainable Homes' thermal target for Code Level 3 matches the new Part L requirements, while Code Levels 4, 5 and 6 will be even more demanding.
TRADA Technology's Building Performance Service has identified 20 critical details that arise in timber frame construction, and has calculated the ψ-value (the measure of heat loss via a cold bridge) in each instance using 'standard' details published in its invaluable reference book and CD package Timber Frame: Standard Details for Houses and Flats. The new publication explains how to demonstrate Part L compliance when using the standard details with mineral wool insulation
In the autumn, TRADA Technology will publish a further set of 'optimised' standard details for increased thermal performance, again for both mineral wool and rigid foam insulation, in electronic format. Designers will be able to select and combine details from either set to achieve regulatory requirements. When purchasing the Standard Details for thermal performance, customers can opt to receive the Optimised Details on publication, with built-in savings, if ordered by the end of August.
Costs are as follows:
Volume 1: Mineral Wool Insulation
£130.00 + VAT (standard details); £200.00 + VAT (standard & optimised details combined)
Volume 2: Rigid Foam Insulation
£130.00 + VAT (standard details); £200.00 + VAT (standard & optimised details combined)
Volumes 1 & 2 combined
£210.00 + VAT (standard details); £300.00 + VAT (standard & optimised details combined)
The optional details will be available individually in publication at the end of July 2010.
