TRADA green oak book reaches RIBA ‘long list’ for award

Green Oak in ConstructionTRADA publication Green Oak in Construction has reached the ‘long list' for the 2008 RIBA Sir Robert McAlpine International Book Award for Construction. The short list will be published next month.

RIBA launched the International Book Awards to celebrate ‘exceptional writing that inspires greater interest and pleasure in the many and diverse aspects of architecture, construction and design'.

Green Oak in Construction is a highly illustrated technical guide to the use of green oak, celebrating the use of oak in the building of modern structures and showing how to achieve excellence in practice. It includes 11 case studies demonstrating best practice and inspirational design, such as the Globe Theatre, York Minster and The Downland Gridshell.  The case studies are supported by design data and specifying advice.

TRADA Publishing Manager Jacquie Shanahan said, "To be selected for the long list for this prestigious prize is a credit to the expertise of the authors on this book, and to the production team.  Green Oak in Construction is a beautifully illustrated and pragmatic guide to a topic which interests many architects, so it is already popular with our customers, and those of RIBA Bookshops."

The annual RIBA book awards programme has become a recognised international event. It is also an important barometer, according to RIBA, ‘for showing the latest direction publishers are taking in many countries and the high quality of the books they are producing'. The awards generally attract a wide geographic response from publishers.

In addition to the Robert McAlpine award, there are three other awards:

  • RIBA International Book Award for Interior Design.
  • RIBA Sir Nikolaus Pevsner International Book Award for Architecture.
  • RIBA International Book Award for Architectural Practice.

The Short Lists for all four awards will be published in late April and the books will be on display in RIBA bookshops in London and Manchester.  Winners will be announced at an awards presentation on 28th May 2008 at the Atheneum Club in London.
