TRADA has launched a prize for engineering students, in conjunction with wood. for good and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), to recognise excellence and innovation.
The winner of the TRADA Timber Engineering Student Prize 2005 will receive £1,000, the runner-up £500. The award is open to all universities, although only two projects per department may be entered. Universities must indicate their intention to submit at least one entry by 25 February 2005. The closing date for entries is 6 June 2005 (within reason, this deadline is flexible to suit exams).
Entries should be designed in accordance with Eurocode 0, 1 and 5: EN 1995-1-1, EN 1995-1-2 and EN 1995-2. They should demonstrate inspiring applications of timber engineering, be it in private houses or offices, or in public buildings such as schools, museums, shopping centres or hospitals. Restoration and conservation projects would also be eligible, as would interesting structures such as bridges or facilities for sporting events. Environmental impact, durability and protective analysis, product specification and economics should be addressed, as well as the conceptual design itself.
