Revised Approved Document A references TRADA publication

The revised England and Wales Building Regulations, Approved Document A, Structure: 2004 edition, came into effect on 1 December 2004. It does not contain the span tables for solid timber members in dwellings, but instead refers to the TRADA Technology document 'Span tables for solid timber members in floors, ceilings and roofs (excluding trussed rafter roofs) for dwellings'.

The tables have been recalculated in line with current British Standards and design codes. They cover C16 and C24 strength class timber for floor joists, ceiling joists and binders, rafters and purlins for roofs between 15 degrees and 45 degrees pitch, and joists for flat roofs.

Important note for readers who have already purchased a copy

If you have already purchased this TRADA publication please note that there is an error in the text on page 15, paragraph 4.1.3. The words "and a concentrated load not exceeding 1.4 kN acting together" should be deleted. The accompanying floor joist span tables are correctly calculated to BS 5268-7-1 using the loads specified in that standard, and there is no error in the spans themselves.
