Research into cladding discolouration now under way
TRADA has launched a project to investigate the causes of discolouration of external unfinished timber cladding and to develop strategies for, its prevention and remedial treatment.
Its aims are threefold:
To identify the cause(s) for the various forms of unpredictable discolouration of unfinished exterior cladding in service.
By means of site-based trials where possible, to establish the effectiveness of preventative treatment or design measures to prevent discolouration occurring in service.
To develop appropriate strategies for the remedy and long-term prevention of discolouration on exterior cladding.
The project will tap into a variety of sources, including archive material, consultancy reports and known cases of on-site discolouration to gather relevant information on the cause(s) of discolouration. Particular importance will be given to examples where remedial and preventative solutions have been proposed and implemented in the past.
Through this work, both specifiers and product manufacturers will be better able to meet client needs through improving cladding aesthetics in service and also to improve the public perception of timber cladding - surface discolouration is often wrongly associated with decay. In addition, a large number of TRADA members supply and install timber cladding and it is hoped that the project will enhance and improve confidence in the use of unfinished wood cladding.
Deliverables will include a written report, identifying the most appropriate recommendations for remedial and prevention strategies. This will allow the subsequent updating of existing TRADA publications on external timber cladding.
There may be an opportunity for cladding suppliers to participate in additional work as an adjunct to the main project. For more information please contact Peter Kaczmar .
