New university timber teaching materials

Lecture material ontopics such as EC5 is being created by TRADATRADA is committed to helping university teaching staff inspire and educate students in the use of wood for all construction applications. A project is under way to identify and meet architectural and engineering students' needs for learning tools and educational support, to enable them to understand the benefits of using timber in their designs. The first modules are expected to be ready in time for the start of the new academic year in October 2010.

TRADA Chief Executive Andrew Abbott said, ‘We have provided much help in recent years through free on-line membership for students, but we would like to be more purposeful and focused, meeting the specific needs of university lecturers in particular. Architecture and Engineering faculties don't typically teach timber per se, but we believe it should be incorporated into modules on subjects like structure, durability, sustainability and so on.'

TRADA has already conducted market research into lecturers' needs and preferences through face-to-face meetings at some universities and a broad on-line survey ‘to refine our thoughts', said Mr Abbott. ‘It is clear that there is a real desire for teaching material that is up to date and fits in with their curricula.'

A new area of the website will be developed for university course tuition support. ‘We will be writing some new bespoke material around curriculum requirements. Much of our existing information is, of course, relevant but it needs to be customised and brought together under module headings. While the initial focus is on architecture and engineering, the material will undoubtedly be relevant to other courses which we will address, given time.'
