New guidance on LUS for marine and freshwater construction
TRADA Technology has published a new Wood Information Sheet Specifying timber use in marine and freshwater construction, based on a joint research project carried out by TRADA in partnership with the Environment Agency and HR Wallingford.
The research identified five species - angelim vermelho, cupiuba, eveuss, okan and tali - which have been allocated to strength classes. The guidance in the Wood Information Sheet is aimed specifically at timber for constructional purposes in Use Classes 3, 4 and 5 as defined in EN 335: 2006 Part 2.
Principal researcher Dr John Williams explained, ‘Historically and to date this industry has favoured a narrow range of tried and tested hardwoods for use in marine and freshwater applications, with greenheart and ekki most often selected as they have long established track records. However, over-reliance on a few species is not compatible with sustainable forest management in the longer term. Lesser used species (LUS) may well be suitable but must be supported with reliable performance data if they are to be taken seriously.'
Additional funding for the research was provided by British Waterways, The Crown Estate, CETMEF (Centre d'Etudes Techniques Maritimes et Fluviales) and VolkerStevin Ltd. Timber samples were provided as a contribution-in-kind by Ecochoice UK Ltd and Aitken & Howard Ltd, with Ecochoice UK Ltd providing expert knowledge on LUS, their commercial availability and performance. The report is available in PDF format free of charge from TRADA click here.
