Scaffold boards – safety on site jeopardised by poor grading

TRADA Technology has repackaged its scaffold board grading course, to help address issues of safety on site. The new course, Principles and grading scaffold board and inspection of used boards will be held in the customer's own yard or construction site, making it highly practical.

Phil O'Leary, head of TRADA Technology's Structural Investigations Section, stressed, ‘It is important for companies to understand how to grade and inspect used boards to ensure that they are maintained to a high standard and, most importantly, are safe to use.  In many cases the people responsible for the task are not timber specialists, so training is key.'

The one-day course is aimed at anyone involved in the production, stocking or hiring out of scaffold boards. It will present an overview of the grading rules, evaluation methods and correct methods of storage. Practical exercises will reinforce the classroom theory.

The course will encompass:

  • Full description of the grading rules
  • An understanding of the grading principles in BS 2482:2009 Specification for timber scaffold boards
  • Comprehensive description of defects in softwood
  • Evaluation methods
  • Specifications including dimensions and tolerances
  • Marking
  • Issuing scaffold board to site
  • Inspection techniques
  • Correct methods of storage

  • We also offer bespoke training courses - contact Phil O'Leary as above.
