NEW case study: Falmouth Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum in Falmouth, completed in 2002, underlines the importance of the sea to a town which has one of the largest deep-water natural harbours in the world. The museum is set between the town centre and the large warehouses of the docks, providing a focus for local identity and attracting the visitors on which the Cornish economy now depends.
Architects Long & Kentish were appointed to the project after an interview competition and worked with Arup as structural engineers. The building actually combines two separate museums: the National Maritime Museum, whose small boat collection had been locked up in storage, and the local Cornwall Maritime Museum, which needed new accommodation. The brief called for a total area of around 5,000 m2, with at least 12 m of headroom in the main space, the Flotilla Gallery.
The building form is based on the vernacular sheds which accommodated the ship builders and timber merchants on the site in the late 19th century. A cylindrical tower provides a lighthouse-like landmark.
The tilted roof - a reference to a sail - sits over walls clad with green oak, all on a granite stone base. The anatomy of the interior is clearly expressed in the varying treatments of the external facade, which includes several different types of oak board cladding.
Inside, ash screens and doors create separate spaces for small displays, service areas, gift shop and café.
