Launch of Wood Awards 2011 – call for entries for ‘revitalised’ event
The 2011 Wood Awards will be launched at The Building Centre on Thursday 24th March at 6.30pm, with a call for entries and an evening talk and discussion exploring the comparative technologies used for previous Gold Award winners, the Savill Building and the Weald & Downland Gridshell.
In its enhanced role as major sponsor alongside the Carpenters' Company and AHEC, TRADA will this year manage the call for entries. TRADA Membership & Marketing Manager Rupert Scott said, ‘2011 will be a defining year for the Wood Awards. This event has become a flagship for the use of wood in outstanding British design, craftsmanship and architecture and it will continue to inspire as it has done for more than 30 years.' Breaking with tradition, however, the winners will be announced at Timber Expo, the new TRADA-sponsored conference and exhibition, at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in September. Mr Scott added, ‘To combine the Wood Awards with Timber Expo is part of a revitalisation which will create a lasting showcase for timber.'
The Savill Building and the Weald & Downland Gridshell were designed by Glenn Howells Architects and Edward Cullinan Architects respectively, engineered by Professor Richard Harris, University of Bath (formerly with Buro Happold), and constructed by Green Oak Carpentry. In their talk, the project teams will compare and contrast these iconic buildings in what promises to be a lively and informative discussion. The event, which is free to attend, will be chaired by Hugh Pearman, Editor of RIBA Journal, and followed by a drinks reception.
Booking is essential and can be done online at http://www.buildingcentre.co.uk/events/event_diary_details.asp?id=668 .
