Acoustic testing – a simplified guide from TRADA

Approved document ETRADA's latest Construction Briefing summarises acoustic requirements under Approved Document E (ADE) and how to meet them, either via pre-completion testing (PCT) or under the Robust Details Ltd (RDL) scheme, as outlined in ADE. PCT covers houses, flats and rooms for residential purposes, whether they are new build or created from a material change of use. RDL however is only appropriate for new build.

According to Regulations Consultant Rupert Scott, acoustic requirements are particularly topical for two main reasons:

  • Upgrading thermal performance can have a significant impact on acoustic performance
  • Some developers will be looking to gain points in codes such as the Code for Sustainable Homes, where up to 4.7 points are available for considerably improved acoustic performance.

The two approaches to proving the sound reduction requirements of the Building Regulations, PCT and RDL, differ quite considerably in terms of eg:

  • When they can be used
  • The procedures
  • The sampling regimes.

This new Construction Briefing is, therefore, devoted to summarising how both systems work using a number of tables and worked examples. Mr Scott explained, ‘It is quite difficult to understand from a reading of Part E what each approach requires and we felt it worthwhile to spend time trying to explain the requirements as simply as possible.'
