New environmental section on askTRADA

TRADA has launched a new environmental section on the askTRADA website underlining the importance of careful forest management. The most frequently asked questions about forest management and chain of custody are answered. The decision to develop the environmental section, said Head of Information Jeremy Vibert, was in recognition of growing demand for timber products with chain of custody certification. ’Architects and specifiers want to use timber because of its many sound environmental properties, but they also want the reassurance that the products specified are being sourced responsibly.’ With nearly seven billion people on the planet, we are seeing the ever increasing impact of man’s activities on the natural environment, he added. ’Wood is truly renewable in a relatively short time frame and can also be recycled through a succession of uses. However, like all resources, the forests which produce timber need careful management if they are to continue to supply the increasing demands placed upon them.’ The new section on the askTRADA website provides basic information on the environmental issues surrounding the use of timber, sustainable forest management and the supply chain of forest products, with more detail available from other websites. Users can click through to a glossary of terms and acronyms and to the answers of frequently asked questions such as: - Can I specify or use wood without harming the environment?
- How can I be sure that the timber and other wood-based products I am specifying or using come from responsibly-managed sources?
- What is meant by ’Chain of Custody certification’?
- What is meant by ’Independent Verification’
- What is the UK Government’s policy for timber procurement and use?
