Insect pests in houses and their remedial treatment
The TRADA Technology Wood Information Sheet (WIS) Insect pests in houses has been updated for ease of downloading online, providing a guide to the 16 common types of insect pests found in houses in the UK and their remedial treatments.
Many of these insects do not attack timber but are more associated with other materials, such as fabrics and foodstuffs. Common insects that do not attack timber include plaster beetles, silverfish, earwigs, biscuit beetles, flour beetles and carpet or fur beetles. Insects that have a superficial effect on timber include wood lice (but they do feed on decaying wood), larder beetle and sawflies.
Among the pests which do attack timber are wood wasps (a forest pest affecting softwoods), forest longhorn beetles (softwoods and hardwoods with bark), ambrosia beetles (wet softwoods and hardwoods), bark borer beetle (softwoods with bark), powder post beetles (sapwood of certain hardwoods), common furniture beetle (softwoods and hardwoods) and house longhorn beetles (sapwood of softwoods, in the UK mainly in Surrey).
