Construction Briefing - Embracing Eurocode 5

TRADA has revised its Construction Briefing Embracing Eurocode 5, aimed at company directors as well as engineers and other technical staff, to include commentary on expected changes to specific product types within the code, and the commercial implications for each. The list includes:
  • Solid timber
  • Structural panels
  • Trussed rafters
  • I-joists
  • Metal web joists
  • Glulam sections
  • Flitch beams
  • Laminated veneer lumber (LVL)

To give an example, in the case of glulam, EC5 designs are expected to be lighter, creating the potential for it to become more competitive with steel and concrete. On the other hand, for solid structural timber, it is often the case that the maximum length for a given grade of timber is a bit shorter in EC5 than it would have been under BS 5268, so the designer will possibly have to go up a grade slightly sooner.

Although EC5 will not become mandatory in the foreseeable future - partly why the industry has been rather hesitant about embracing it wholeheartedly - the larger structural engineering practices are using it and the systems companies, such as metal plates, are adopting EC5 because of the obvious benefits of pan-European trade. In addition, public procurement rules (affecting large projects as well as social housing) are expected increasingly to make Eurocodes the standard choice.

Another driver is that now that BS 5268 has been withdrawn, structural engineers are nervous of working to it on new projects for fear of being sued in the event of a problem - and designing to a combination of EC5 and BS 5268 on any project should be absolutely taboo.
