Renowned sports architect David Morley will add inspiration to TRADA's fast approaching In Touch with Timber conference on 20th May. Established 20 years ago and now in the UK's Top 100, David Morley Architects has earned a first class reputation in sport. The Indoor School at Lord's, followed by the prestigious Hub in Regent's Park are two notable projects.
Particularly relevant to the theme of In Touch with Timber, however, is the 9700 m2 athletics centre, home of the prestigious Enfield & Haringey Athletics Club, but designed primarily for the training and development of elite athletes on UK Athletics' World Class Programme. David Morley's credentials therefore to discuss ‘2012 and beyond' are impeccable.
An honorary scholar of King's College Cambridge, he graduated with First Class Honours in 1977, winning the Richard's Prize. He obtained the Diploma in Architecture in 1980. His student work featured in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, as well as being published in the Sunday Times. His work since has been recognised with many awards and he acts as an awards and competition assessor for the Royal Institute of British Architects.
David Morley said, ‘Timber has been a traditional material used for sports buildings for many years, but usually on a small scale. Recent developments with three-dimensional engineering have now made timber a fantastic material for freeform longer span structures as well.' In his presentation, he will talk about his experience working with timber on sports and residential projects and its potential applications for 2012.
He and his partners are renowned for finding simple solutions to complex briefs. The Lee Valley Athletics Centre seeks to enhance the special qualities of the site at Pickett's Lock and reflect the sustainability objectives of the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. It is envisaged that the centre will be a key training facility for the 2012 Olympic Games, but above and beyond that, it serves the regional and local communities, encouraging and inspiring participation in athletics.
David Morley joins a prestigious line up of speakers, who include Lord David Clark, Chairman of the Forestry Commission and Morag Stuart, Olympic Delivery Authority Director of Procurement. MPs Paddy Tipping and James Paice will join Lord Clark and Lord Richard Newby, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for The Treasury, in an open forum at the start of the afternoon session.
In Touch with Timber will bring together suppliers, designers, architects and specifiers and will again take place at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster. Delegate fee is £140.00 + VAT for TRADA members and £170.00 + VAT for non-members. For the full programme visit www.trada.co.uk/itwt08. To book contact Louise Govier on 01494569622 or email .
