Annual student woodworking competition boosts learning of craft skills
The third National Student Woodworking Competition has been launched. Sponsor Fitchett & Woollacott is hoping for even more UK schools and students to take part than last year. The competition has gathered momentum since its inception, with ever growing levels of participation and Design & Technology teachers praising its positive influence in motivating students to produce their best work.
More than 300 pieces of woodwork were submitted last year, creating a superb showcase for the woodworking skills of students of different ages. The 2008 gold medal winners included a laminated chair fashioned in beech, a chess table in oak, teak and walnut and a coffee table in mahogany. These and other entries can be viewed at http://www.fitchetts.co.uk/
Students compete in three age bands for prizes which include home cinema systems, games consoles and MP3 players. Schools stand to win timber from sustainable forests and state-of-the-art equipment for their D&T workshops. An awards ceremony will be held at Fitchett & Woollacott's Nottingham headquarters in November.
Taking part is easy. Teachers simply e-mail a couple of digital images of the finished work. Full details on how to enter can also be found at http://www.fitchetts.co.uk/.
Founded in 1900, Fitchett & Woollacott operates a specialist service for D&T departments of schools and colleges, with a bespoke catalogue for educational needs. Jointly with sister company Brooks Bros (UK) Ltd, it holds independent certification from FSC, PEFC and BM TRADA.
