How is timber strength graded?

Timber can be machine graded or visually graded. Visual grading has to be carried out by qualified graders in accordance with the requirements in BS EN 14081-1: 2005. Graders assess the timber characteristics such as knots, fissures, slope of grain etc against the permissible limits in the appropriate standards.
