David Morley set up David Morley Architects in 1987, having left Foster + Partners as a director working in London and France. The first major commission won by David was to work on the hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, in St John’s Wood in London. The independent hospital needed to expand its buildings on the congested London site, whilst retaining the quality and tranquillity that patients expect. The success of this work lead to repeat work for this client and further work in the healthcare sector for both private and NHS clients. The Indoor Cricket School at Lord’s was the first sports commission won by the practice, winning six awards and was Stirling prize runner-up. Subsequently the practice worked extensively in sports, initially in cricket and then diversifying to cover all indoor and outdoor training and performance centres.
The practice’s skill at solving complex sites and briefs with apparently simple solutions has helped our work to diversify to a number of other sectors, and we now enjoy a great deal of commissions for education (from primary to higher), residential and mixed use, working with many of the country’s top clients (as voted by RIBA and AJ).
Feedback from our clients confirms that our ability to consistently exceed the brief within tight constraints sets us apart from our competitors. Underlying this are core skills of analysis and innovation, proof of which can be found in numerous award winning projects.
The practice is involved in research into sustainable design, installing an innovative Green Wall at the offices in Clerkenwell to explore the effect plants can have in cooling down cities.
