Description
Cross-laminated (CL) timber offers opportunities to use timber in situations where designers would normally use traditional materials such as steel, concrete and masonry. As with any new structural material, it is essential that designers understand how to achieve its potential while respecting its limitations.
This Wood Information Sheet (WIS) is an overview of the structural principles and covers typical connection types, supporting engineered timber floors, assembly, shear resistance, shrinkage, fire, vibration and disproportionate collapse.
First published in 2009, this is a revision with minor corrections.
Companion publications GD10: Cross-laminated timber - design guide for project feasibility and Worked example: 12-storey building of cross-laminated timber (Eurocode 5) offer guidance for structural engineers designing multi-storey CL timber buildings.
